LEH: The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), held a crucial meeting at the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat to review the development and promotion of the handicraft and handloom sectors in Ladakh. The meeting included key officials, including the Director of Industries and Commerce, Sheikh Nazir, Assistant Director of Handicraft, Anjil Singh, and Assistant Director of the Handloom Department, Imtisaal Rasool. Dr Pawan Kotwal, Advisor to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, was also present.
The Lieutenant Governor inquired about the ongoing initiatives by the Handloom and Handicraft Departments to develop these sectors and empower local artisans, particularly women self-help groups (SHGs). He further asked about the preparations being made for the upcoming handicraft and handloom exhibitions in New Delhi in the coming months.
Emphasizing the importance of promoting Ladakhi products, the Lieutenant Governor stressed the need for improving quality and addressing logistical challenges at the Brand Ladakh Emporium in New Delhi. He called for a focus on ensuring that only high-quality products are stocked at the Emporium to meet the expectations of customers. He also urged for the promotion and marketing of Ladakh’s artisan-made products, alongside training programs to help artisans produce goods that align with market demands.
The Lieutenant Governor further highlighted the necessity for artisans to design products that cater to customer preferences, fostering creativity and relevance in the products showcased.
The Director of Industries and Commerce, Sheikh Nazir, along with the Assistant Directors, briefed the Lieutenant Governor on their efforts to empower artisans and SHGs, ensure the supply of high-quality products at the Brand Ladakh Emporium, and coordinate the upcoming promotional events in Delhi where Ladakhi handicrafts and handloom products will be displayed.
