Ladakh Adm, Civil Bodies Hold Talks to Restore Calm After Violence

Leh, Oct 9: The Ladakh Union Territory administration on Thursday met with representatives of civil society groups in Leh to defuse tensions following last month’s violence that left four people dead and several injured, officials said.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal, was attended by DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal, Leh Apex Body (LAB) leaders Thupstan Chhewang and Chering Dorjey Lakruk, LAHDC Chairman Tashi Gyalson, and senior leaders from the BJP, Congress, and AAP.

Officials said the discussions focused on restoring normalcy and confidence among residents. Participants reiterated key demands — a judicial probe into the September 24 firing incident, release of detained persons, restoration of mobile internet, and adequate compensation for the victims’ families.

The meeting began with a one-minute silence for those killed in the violence. Gyalson said deliberations were held in a “conducive atmosphere,” and officials assured that mobile internet services would likely be restored by Thursday night or Friday morning.

Prohibitory orders restricting gatherings of five or more people remain in force in parts of Ladakh since the incident, officials added. (Agencies)
