    Kashmiri bird researcher bags prestigious scholarship at JCU

    Srinagar, Sep 14 (KNO): In a remarkable achievement highlighting the potential and determination of Kashmiri youth, Parvaiz Yousuf, a recent graduate from the Central University of , has earned a fully funded scholarship to pursue a PhD in Ecology and Evolution at James Cook University, one of the 's top-ranked institutions.

    According to the news agency, Parvaiz, a resident of Chatlam Larpora in Pampore, completed an integrated BSc-MSc in Zoology in 2022. He has been awarded the prestigious James Cook University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (JCUPRS), which covers full tuition fees, provides a generous stipend, and includes overseas coverage. The total value of the scholarship amounts to approximately Rs 1.66 crore.

    Growing up near the serene Chatlam Wetland Reserve in Pampore, Parvaiz developed a deep fascination with the migratory birds that frequented the area, which sparked in him a lifelong passion for ornithology. After completing his master's degree, he authored a well-received book titled Birds of and Kashmir Including Ladakh, the first comprehensive documentation of the region's avian diversity.

    Parvaiz's early curiosity about birds turned simple childhood walks into thrilling discoveries, which fuelled his future academic pursuits. After his MSc in Zoology from the Central University of Kashmir, he assumed the role of Director at the Wetland Research Centre for Wildlife Conservation Fund (WCF), where he focused on studying migratory birds in wetlands.

    The JCUPRS scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance, research experience, strong references, and proficiency in academic and English language assessments. James Cook University, located in Australia, is renowned for its excellence in ecology and evolution studies and ranks in the top 0.5% of universities globally.

    For his PhD, Parvaiz will focus on the Southern black-throated finch, a bird species facing habitat loss due to environmental changes. His research aims to contribute significant insights into ecology and develop strategies for conserving this and other endangered species.

    His extensive work in wildlife conservation and deep understanding of avian life has made him a prominent figure in promoting ecotourism and environmental stewardship in Kashmir—(KNO).
