Kashmir violence takes toll of 1300 power transformers

SRINAGAR: The ongoing unrest has put an extra burden on the already financially struggling Power Development Department as around 1300 transformers have been damaged during the last 115 days in mostly during the clashes.

As per official figures around 1300 transformers were damaged during the last four months (July, August, September and October). Official sources said most of these transformers were damaged during the clashes with protestors.

The damaging of distribution transformers by protesters during the last around four months has put extra financial burden on the already financially struggling Power Development Department which has failed to clear the liabilities of crores of rupees to private firms.

An official of Power Development Department said hundreds of transformers have been damaged for the last 115 days in Kashmir. “These transformers have been damaged by stone pelting, and pellets resulting scores of areas have plunged into darkness,” the official said. “Some transformers have been repaired but some are yet to be made operational due to prevailing situation or lack of funds.”

President, Kashmir Transformers Manufacturers and Repairs Association, Jalal-Ud-Din Wani said the government has a liability of Rs 30 crores to transformer repairing firms

“Government has failed to clear our bills. Now there has been an increase in number of damaged transformers,” Jalal-Ud-Din said.

He said during the last four months, 300 damaged transformers were brought to his workshop. “We have repaired 200 so far but 100 are still lying in the workshop,” he added.

There are around 25 private transformers repairing firms operating in the state. Besides that government has its own repairing workshop in each district. But the government is mostly dependent on private transformers workshops in repairing them as J&K has highest rate of damaged transformers in .

There has been a significant increase in damaged transformers in the state for the last few years. As per official figures, over 25% of the distribution transformers of the Power Development Department suffer damages every year. There are a total of 51919 distribution transformers of PDD in J&K of which around 13000 transfers get damaged every year. The rate of transformers damage in Kashmir valley is 28% while as the same in region is only 22% and in region the rate of damage is 16%.

Minister of state for Power Farooq Ahmad Andrabi said the government was well aware about the pending liabilities of private firms and will be cleared soon. “Besides that police is also working who has damaged the distribution transfers and act accordingly,” he added.
