drug racket busted in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) has busted a drug smuggling racket with the arrest of a Kashmiri and two Mumbaikars with 50 kg of drugs worth Rs 2 crore. Interestingly, the NCB would have been fooled if they had not got a special tip-off about the drugs being concealed under a false cavity of the truck.

While the NCB has arrested three persons, they are looking for two to three more persons involved in the racket. NCB booked Khursheed Ahmed, Mohammed Asif and Peter Fernanades under the Narcotics Drugs and Pyschotrophic Substance Act (NDPS). While Ahmed is from Kashmir, Asif and Peter are from Mahim.

What has baffled the investigating agency is the fact that racketeers have been smuggling contraband in the city for the last two years and yet they never came under the radar.

Last week, the NCB got a special tip-off that a gang has been in trafficking and they regularly conceal contraband under loads of goods. A police team followed the truck right from Nashik, Pune and until it reached Mahim where they unloaded the drugs and handed over to Asif and Peter. Police said the duo were regularly smuggling and selling the drugs in Mumbai, but never got caught.

“The modus operandi of Ahmed is that he takes orders of delivering goods to various parts of Maharashtra from Kashmir. This time he had brought loads of iron rods used for construction and under the rods there was a false cavity under which he had hidden the drugs,” said Sanjay Jha, zonal director of NCB. Police are also probing if there is any terror angle to the drugs as it is coming from Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the NCB also arrested a 24-year-old from Dongri with 282 bottles of Corex cough syrup and 10 gram of mephedrone worth Rs 5.4 lakh. Acting on the tip-off, the NCB was looking for Shakeel Qureshi alias Mota, a notorious drug addict, but when police raided his place in Dongri, they found his son Shaqlain Qureshi with Corex and MD.
