New Delhi: Fourteen former international cricket captains on Tuesday jointly urged Pakistan’s government to ensure proper medical treatment and legal access for jailed former prime minister and World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan, citing reports of deteriorating health.
In a petition addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the signatories expressed “deep concern” over Khan’s reported loss of vision in his right eye and prison conditions, calling for immediate specialist care, humane detention standards and unhindered legal processes. They said a figure of Khan’s stature “deserves dignity and basic human consideration befitting a former national leader and global sporting icon.”
The appeal was co-signed by Greg Chappell, Belinda Clark, Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Ian Chappell, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh and John Wright.
Notably, no former Pakistan captains were among the signatories. Earlier, Pakistani greats including Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shahid Afridi had publicly urged authorities to provide the 73-year-old with the “best medical care.”
Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been jailed since August 2023 following his 2022 ouster. He is serving a 31-year sentence after a December 2025 corruption verdict. (Agencies
