Kamala Harris Takes Tough Stance on Big Tech But Opposes TikTok Ban
As the new frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, Kamala Harris’ views on regulating the tech industry and developing technologies like artificial intelligence are coming under scrutiny. While the vice president has a history of grilling tech CEOs on privacy and data issues, she also recognizes the importance of balancing oversight with innovation.
Harris comes from California’s tech-heavy backdrop and has long-standing connections to Silicon Valley. However, as a lawmaker she made it clear that giants like Facebook and Google need stricter rules to protect consumers. In 2018, she challenged Mark Zuckerberg over Cambridge Analytica at a heated congressional hearing. As a senator, Harris introduced legislation to help states set up their own tech advisory teams.
On AI, the 59-year-old views it as both a tool for progress but also a threat if left unchecked. She says systems must be developed safely to avoid manipulating facts or undermining democracy. As VP, Harris helped Biden issue directives for responsible AI use across government. On cryptocurrency, expect her to maintain the current administration’s regulatory approach.
Unlike some critics, Harris does not advocate breaking up large tech companies. Still, she believes oversight is needed when privacy becomes compromised. Interestingly, despite security worries, Harris opposes banning the popular video app TikTok in the US, wanting to instead address concerns with its Chinese owner. With a pragmatic blend of accountability and enablement of innovation, Harris aims to navigate big tech’s growing influence constructively.
