J&K: Two Cloudbursts Trigger Flash Floods, Landslides in Doda, Kishtwar

Jammu, June 2: Two cloudbursts triggered flash floods and landslides in parts of Doda and Kishtwar districts, disrupting traffic and inundating a market area, though no loss of life or property was reported, officials said on Tuesday.

The first cloudburst occurred in the Gahan area of Sarthal in Kishtwar district, followed by another incident in Machipal. The resulting flash floods triggered a landslide near Drabshalla, blocking traffic on the Kishtwar-Jammu highway.

Another cloudburst struck Bandekhra Nalla in Thathri town of Doda district, sending floodwaters and debris into the local market area. Several schoolchildren and commuters were caught in the sudden flooding, while a number of vehicles became trapped in mud and debris.

Local residents immediately launched rescue efforts and safely evacuated the affected schoolchildren.

Officials said no casualties, injuries or damage to property had been reported from the affected areas so far.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Pawan Kotwal said that no loss of life or property had been reported in the district.

Teams from the District Red Cross, Police and Revenue departments were deployed to assess the situation and assist residents. Authorities also pressed men and machinery into service to clear debris and restore traffic on blocked stretches of the highway.

The district administration has placed all concerned departments on alert, while officials from the Revenue, Disaster Management and Police departments are continuously monitoring vulnerable areas. Mobile patrol teams have also been deployed to remain in contact with local communities and provide assistance where required.

Officials said the situation remains under control and no further adverse incidents have been reported. (Agencies)
