J&K: Razdan Pass Receives Fresh Snowfall, Temperatures Dip in Gurez Valley

Bandipora, Oct 6: The Razdan Pass, known as the gateway to Gurez Valley, witnessed a fresh spell of snowfall on Monday, signalling the early arrival of winter in north Kashmir’s higher reaches.

The light snowfall transformed the mountain slopes of Razdan Top into a pristine white landscape, captivating locals and travellers alike. However, the scenic beauty also came with a sharp drop in temperature and renewed concerns over seasonal isolation for Gurez residents.

Officials said the Bandipora–Gurez road, the only surface link between Gurez and the district headquarters, is under close observation due to fluctuating weather conditions.

A senior district administration official confirmed that vehicular traffic remains unaffected so far but warned that worsening conditions could lead to temporary restrictions.

“We are continuously monitoring the Razdan stretch to ensure road safety. Any adverse change in weather may force a temporary closure to prevent accidents,” the official said.

For locals, the first snowfall brought a mix of joy and anxiety.

“The valley looks breathtaking after the first snow, but it also means our long winter isolation is near,” said Abdul Rahman, a resident of Dawar in Gurez, referring to the months-long closure of the route during heavy snowfall.

The Meteorological Department has predicted light precipitation in upper reaches over the next few days and advised travellers to exercise caution while commuting through high-altitude areas.

Authorities have urged locals to stay updated through official weather bulletins and begin early winter preparedness, anticipating that the coming months could bring heavier snowfall and extended road closures. (Agencies)
