    Act against traffic chaos

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir must urgently take stringent and sustained action against traffic rule violators. The reckless attitude of many drivers not only endangers their own lives but also poses a grave threat to the safety of others, creating persistent chaos on the roads.

Road safety in J&K has emerged as a critical concern, with the frequency of accidents rising alarmingly. Each day brings reports of fatal collisions, often due to the blatant disregard of traffic regulations. Tragically, it has become increasingly rare to witness a day without a major road mishap in the Union Territory. Most of these accidents are the direct result of irresponsible driving, overspeeding, and a complete lack of adherence to rules.

In just the past three days, four precious lives have been lost and over 30 individuals injured in separate road accidents across the region. These grim statistics reflect the urgency of the situation. A significant number of these incidents could have been avoided had proper traffic norms been enforced and followed.

The administration must initiate robust and continuous enforcement drives across all districts, rather than focusing only on select urban areas. Stern action against habitual violators will serve as a strong deterrent and is essential to curbing the growing menace of road accidents. The deteriorating traffic situation demands prompt and comprehensive intervention.

Additionally, the government must ensure the installation of CCTV cameras in every town and semi-urban area, similar to what has been implemented in Jammu and Srinagar. These surveillance systems will play a crucial role in identifying and penalizing repeat offenders, thus reinforcing the rule of law on the roads.

However, enforcement cannot be a one-time or symbolic affair. Traffic monitoring must be institutionalized as a continuous process across all districts. Sporadic drives have little impact; what is needed is routine checking, consistent booking of violators, and visible enforcement presence to instill discipline among road users.

Too many families in J&K have been shattered by preventable road tragedies. It is high time that traffic violations are treated with the seriousness they deserve. Authorities must act firmly to safeguard lives and ensure public safety.

Ensuring safer roads must be a top priority. A coordinated effort involving the government, traffic police, and the public is essential to bring about lasting change. Strict adherence to traffic rules is not just a matter of regulation—it is a collective responsibility towards preserving life and restoring order on the roads of Jammu and Kashmir.
