Jammu Medicos repair congenital defect in 18-month-old child’s heart


Tawi, Oct 10: Doctors at the Government Medical College Jammu on Tuesday successfully repaired a large hole in the heart of an 18-month-old child through a small cut around the lower half of the right nipple.

As per an official communiqué, the large hole measuring 2×1.7 cm was repaired by doctors of the medical college's Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery using a piece taken from the covering around the heart of the patient (Pericardium) .

Periareolar Incision is a novel technique in which the heart is not stopped to carry out the repair of a hole in the heart. In this case also, the procedure was carried out while the heart was continuously beating.

There are only a few Cardiothoracic centres which fix the holes in the beating heart, remarked the Chief surgeon Dr Shyam Singh.

All the expenses of consumable and other drugs used were covered under Ayushman Bharat Scheme, it stated.

The handout said that the surgical team comprised Dr Shyam Singh, Dr I.A Mir, Dr Arvind Kohli assisted by Dr Akansha Sharma, Dr Simriti Bhat. Dr Mohit Arora, Dr Vivek Gandotra, Dr Prabhdeep Singh, Dr Javed and Dr Rouf also helped in carrying out the procedure.

Cardiac Anaesthesia was conducted smoothly by Professor and Head Dr Puja Vimesh (Principal GMC Doda), Dr Rasmeet Kaur, Dr Vikas Gupta, Dr Heena, Dr Tanvi, Dr Ramnivas assisted by Senior Cardiac Anaesthesia technologist Vikas Sharma, Arif, Abhiranjan Kotwal and Karan Singh.

Senior Perfusionists Chananjit Singh and Roshan Lal operated the vital heart lung machine which is the most crucial part of the procedure.

Principal, Medical College Jammu, Professor Dr Ashutosh Gupta while visiting the patient congratulated and applauded the team effort.

He further stressed that the people should utilise these facilities at their doorsteps under Ayushman Bharat Scheme which is being run successfully in GMC & AH, Jammu.
