Chandigarh, December 3:The BSF has foiled a cross-border intrusion bid after its troopers shot down a suspect at Dhinda post in Pathankot district of .

BSF personnel shot the intruder dead on Friday night after he came close to the border fencing in Bamiyal area, a police official posted in Pathankot said on Saturday. Pathankot was on high alert today and a massive search operation was launched after a local resident claimed to have spotted 4 to 5 armed men roaming around suspiciously in this border district of Punjab. As many as 250 personnel including SWAT commandos were deployed in search operation. Around 250 security personnel including SWAT commandos were sent in the search operation in the hilly areas situated on the outskirt of Punjab and HP, police said. However, police said nothing suspicious was found in the operation which went on for around four hours.

“We conducted search operation after a man claiming to have spotted 4-5 suspicious men, carrying arms, yesterday,” Pathankot SSP Rakesh Kaushal said this evening.

In any case, he said the man who guaranteed to have seen suspicious men gave information after 24 hours. “But we did not take any risk and followed up on the information quickly,” said SSP.

It was a joint operation conducted by Punjab police, HP police and army, he said.

In the meantime, Kaushal said the man who gave information seemed to be a drunkard.

Terrorists assaulted Pathankot air base on the intervening night of January 1-2 this year, claiming the lives of seven security staff while four terrorists were slaughtered.

Significantly, a day prior to that attack, SSP of Gurdaspur had reported sighting of five armed men in Pathankot.
