India's Historic Paralympics Success on September 2nd, 2024
In a landmark achievement, India won a total of eight medals on September 2nd at the Paris Paralympics, which was the countries' single most successful day ever at the prestigious multi-sport event. Individual stories of grit and determination emerged as athletes from various disciplines managed to get on the podium.
The day began with Yogesh Kathuniya clinching silver in men's discus throw in the F56 category. Despite a personal best throw, Yogesh felt he was capable of more and targeting the top spot. Nitesh Kumar then scripted a memorable victory in the badminton men's singles SL3 category final, overcoming his Britsh opponent in three hard fought games.
In another riveting women's singles match, Thulasimathi Murugesan ensured India's first ever Paralympic medal in badminton by settling for silver after a valiant performance in the SU5 category final. Soon after, Manisha Ramdass repeated the feat by clinching bronze. Veteran shuttler Suhas Yathiraj was in action next, securing silver despite a spirited title defence.
Amidst the badminton bonanza, Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi combined to grab the country's inaugural archery medal at the games – a bronze in the mixed team compound open event. The pièce de résistance was Sumit Antil's breathtaking gold medal winning display in the men's javelin F64 final. He broke his own world record with mammoth throws to defend his title in style.
Wrapping up a day of incredible highs, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan ensured another podium finish for India with women's singles SH6 bronze. With contributions from various disciplines, September 2nd will be etched in the history books as India's most decorated day till date at the Paralympics. The athletes demonstrated true #Cheer4India spirit on the global stage.
