India's dynamic duo of Sukhjeet and Abhishek shine in big win over Japan
The Indian men's hockey team continued their dominant run in the Asian Champions Trophy with another comprehensive victory. Forwards Sukhjeet Singh and Abhishek turned out to be the inspiration behind the 5-1 drubbing of Japan on Monday.
The duo needed just over two minutes to give India an early advantage, capitalizing on chances created by their teammates. Sukhjeet got the ball rolling with a quick finish before Abhishek doubled the lead with a fine individual effort. Their instant impact set the tone for India's control of proceedings in the opening exchanges.
India maintained their intensity even after taking a comfortable lead. Drag flick specialist Sanjay joined the party with a well-taken penalty corner conversion. His goal highlighted his ability as a potential backup to Harmanpreet Singh going forward.
Japan pulled one back towards the end of the third quarter but Uttam Singh restored the three-goal margin for India. Sukhjeet had the final say, finding the net from an exquisite Abhishek assist in the dying minutes.
The emphatic 5-1 victory leaves India at the top of the table having won both matches so far. Their early season form suggests it will take a special performance to deny them a title defense. Up next for the Olympic bronze medallists is a meeting with Malaysia on Wednesday.
