India announce squad for Sri Lanka T20Is, youngsters in focus as injury concerns loom
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, scheduled to start on July 27th in Pallekele. While several senior players have been rested, the squad provides opportunities for youngsters to stake their claim.
The series will be a chance for newcomers like Ravi Bishnoi and Ruturaj Gaikwad to impress in the absence of spin veterans Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. Bishnoi grabbed eyeballs with his displays in Zimbabwe recently and will aim to carry forward his form. Hardik Pandya returns to lead the lineup after fulfilling his captaincy duties for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.
Behind the stumps, the selectors face a choice between rising talent Rishabh Pant and the impressive Sanju Samson. While Pant played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph, Samson has been in red-hot form for Rajasthan Royals and is eagerly awaiting a chance to prove himself on the international stage. The series provides an opportunity to cement their place as first-choice wicketkeeper for the future.
Team India faces a tough challenge against a wounded Sri Lankan side battling injuries. Key seamers Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Thushara and Binura Feranando are ruled out, leaving the domestic bowlers with much to prove. Young guns like Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana will need to step up in the absence of experienced campaigners.
Predictions for the first T20I suggest Bishnoi may spearhead the spin attack for India alongside Axar Patel. While Samson may have to wait his turn, Pant is tipped to continue his exploits with the bat. For Sri Lanka, the onus will be on openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando to give the hosts a bright start. With the transition ongoing on both sides, the series provides the platforms for talented individuals to make their mark.
