GST collection hits record high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April, up 12.6% Y-o-Y

New Delhi:  India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections surged to an all-time high of approximately ₹2.37 lakh crore in April 2025, marking a 12.6% year-on-year growth, according to data released by the Finance Ministry on Thursday.

This record-setting revenue surpasses the previous peak of ₹2.10 lakh crore reported in April 2024, which until now had been the second-highest since the implementation of the GST regime on July 1, 2017. In comparison, GST collections for March 2025 stood at ₹1.96 lakh crore.

The latest figures show that revenue from domestic transactions rose by 10.7% to about ₹1.9 lakh crore, while collections from imported goods witnessed a robust 20.8% increase, amounting to ₹46,913 crore.

Additionally, the issuance of GST refunds rose sharply by 48.3%, reaching ₹27,341 crore in April. After adjusting for these refunds, the net GST revenue stood at over ₹2.09 lakh crore — a 9.1% rise compared to the same period last year.

The consistent increase in GST collections reflects sustained economic activity and improved compliance, providing a boost to the central and state exchequers. Analysts say the high revenue will aid fiscal consolidation efforts and give the government additional room for capital expenditure.

The Finance Ministry attributed the growth to continued economic recovery, digitization efforts, and increased use of analytics to curb tax evasion. April’s record collection underscores GST’s stabilizing role in India’s tax ecosystem.
