New Delhi: The government has notified 33 questions that will be asked of citizens during the first phase of Census 2027, which begins on April 1, officials said.
The first phase, known as the house-listing and housing census, will be conducted over a 30-day period to be specified by each State and Union Territory between April 1 and September 30 this year. During this phase, enumerators will collect detailed information on housing conditions, household amenities and basic assets.
Officials said enumerators will seek details on ownership and use of houses, construction material used for floors and roofs, number of rooms, condition of the house and the number of persons usually residing in each household. Information about the head of the household, including name, sex, social category such as Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe, and ownership status, will also be recorded.
Citizens will be asked about access to basic facilities such as drinking water, lighting, toilets, wastewater outlets, bathing facilities, kitchens, LPG or PNG connections and the main cooking fuel used. Data on household assets like radio, television, internet access, computers, mobile phones, smartphones and vehicles will also be collected.
In addition, enumerators will record information on the main cereal consumed in the household and a mobile number for census-related communication.
The government has also provided a self-enumeration option, which will be available for a 15-day period prior to the start of the house-listing operations.
The Census will be carried out in two phases, with the house-listing and housing census from April to September 2026, followed by population enumeration in February 2027. (Agencies)
