In a recent interview, veteran Australian cricketer Nicole Bolton shared an anecdote from the early days of her international career that served as a wake-up call. The left-handed batter spoke about a conversation she had with former Australian bowler and head coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick where she was brutally compared to Indian legend Mithali Raj in terms of her strike rate.
Bolton recalled Fitzpatrick pulling her aside after a List A match where she scored watchful half-centuries at a moderate pace. The coach asked if she truly wanted to be known as “the Mithali Raj of Australia” by scoring slow centuries while the team lost. This stinging feedback surprised Bolton and made her realize her style of play was not meeting the expectations of selectors.
It was a catalyst for change – in her next innings, Bolton unleashed an attacking 168-ball knock with 24 boundaries to prove she was capable of scoring quicker. She credits this chat with Fitzpatrick for motivating her to amend her game. Though seen as one of the finest female cricketers, Mithali’s strike rate is sometimes criticized – so the comparison left Bolton feeling her international career might not last if she didn’t accelerate. Her revelations provide valuable insight into the pressure to perform faced by women cricketers.
