“Ensuring No Genuine Voters Are Left Behind – EC Issues Fresh Guidelines on Voter ID Proof”

New Delhi, Apr 4: With the goal of ensuring every eligible citizen can exercise their fundamental right to vote, the Election Commission of has issued new instructions relaxing ID proof requirements for voters. EC recognizes that minor errors in official documents should not deprive genuine voters of their franchise.

As per the guidelines, discrepancies in name spelling or clerical mistakes on voter ID cards will be overlooked as long as the identity of the voter is established. Voters will also be allowed to cast their ballot if their name appears in the electoral rolls even if the ID card was issued for a different assembly constituency.

The commission has also expanded the list of alternative identification documents accepted at polling stations in case the voter ID card is not presented. Citizens can now prove identity by showing Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, driving license, bank/post office passbook, insurance smart card and several other government-issued photo IDs.

In an important provision for overseas voters, original Indian passports will solely be accepted as proof of identity for NRIs registered in the electoral rolls. This aims to make the voting process more smooth and inclusive for non-resident Indians.

With the goal of maximum enfranchisement and participation in the coming elections, the EC directives relax norms without compromising electoral integrity. The measures ensure no eligible Indian is left from casting their valuable franchise due to minor issues with their documentation. Lok Sabha and state assembly polls starting April will see these guidelines facilitating easier voting access for all.
