NEW DELHI: Air India recently honored Captain Devi Sharan, the heroic pilot of the 1999 hijacked IC814 flight, as he completed his final flight as a pilot. The airline paid tribute to him with an emotional post on Instagram: “The Sky Bows, the Runway Salutes – A name etched in history, a legacy written in courage.”
Flight IC814, which was operated by Indian Airlines (now part of Air India), was hijacked by five terrorists in December 1999, just 40 minutes after takeoff from Kathmandu. There were 179 passengers and 11 crew members on board, including Captain Sharan, who became a symbol of bravery during the crisis. The hijacking lasted for several days, and negotiations led by the Indian government ultimately brought the hostages safely back home.
Air India shared a video montage celebrating Captain Sharan’s illustrious career, featuring moments from his time with the airline and his return as a hero. The video included a heartwarming farewell from Captain Sharan himself, recorded during his final flight from Melbourne to Delhi. “This is my last flight, and I could not be more thankful for a truly memorable and glorious career,” he said in the announcement. “I would like to thank my passengers over the years for giving me the opportunity to fly you safely back home.” He signed off with, “Fly safe, fly high. Jai Hind.”
Captain Sharan’s legacy as a hero during the hijacking continues to be celebrated as he takes his well-earned retirement from a remarkable career.
