JAMMU, Jan 27: The newly established Delhi-Srinagar train connectivity is set to significantly enhance the pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi, with a pilgrim facilitation centre now operational at the Katra railway station for easy registration. This development, according to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Anshul Garg, is expected to position Katra as a major regional hub for pilgrims.
Speaking at the 76th Republic Day celebration held at the Shrine Board’s Sports Complex in Katra, Garg discussed the board’s ongoing efforts to boost tourism in the region. Among key initiatives, Garg highlighted the upcoming developments, including the construction of four temples along the Trikuta Hills Parikrama Marg and the development of a new helipad for improved connectivity to the Shiv Khori Shrine.
Garg also pointed to the recent milestone of the Vande Bharat Express completing its maiden trial run on January 25 on the Katra-Srinagar rail section, which will connect the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country. The new train service is expected to enhance accessibility and significantly boost the pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi.
To cater to the growing number of pilgrims, the Shrine Board has set up a yatri facilitation centre at the Katra Railway Station, allowing pilgrims to conveniently register for the yatra upon arrival. The board has also been working on multiple infrastructure projects to improve facilities for the increasing influx of devotees, which has exceeded 90 lakh annually for the third consecutive year.
Highlighting major developments, Garg mentioned a Rs 20 crore project for a Darshani Deodi Queue Complex designed to accommodate 1,500 devotees in all weather conditions, as well as a new exit track and Vaishnavi Bhawan to ease congestion. Other initiatives include a Rs 25 crore project to rejuvenate the Banganga rivulet, a proposed Laser Light and Sound project, and AI-based CCTV cameras for enhanced security.
For the upcoming Chaitra Navratras, new facilities such as battery car parking and an Adhkuwari holding area will be introduced. Garg also announced that residents of Katra town and 41 surrounding villages will be given priority darshan on presenting Aadhaar cards as proof of residence.
With these enhancements, the Shrine Board aims to provide an enriched and seamless pilgrimage experience for devotees, while also improving the region’s tourism infrastructure.
