Could your failing sense of smell be an early sign of heart issues?

Many of us likely experienced a diminished sense of taste and smell during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. While some have fully recovered, many continue to battle weakened smell and taste perception. An interesting new study discovered that impaired olfaction, or smell ability, may potentially indicate or contribute to congestive heart failure in older adults.

Indian experts were consulted to determine if a poor sense of smell truly relates to cardiac problems. Dr. S, a cardiologist at a renowned hospital, explained how research shows smell loss could link to the initial phases of neurodegenerative disorders and common illnesses like cardiovascular diseases. The professional believed the association involves blood vessel health, as smell heavily relies on normal blood flow within the olfactory bulb and regions involved in odor detection. Over time, prolonged inflammation and degeneration impact both the heart and smell pathways simultaneously.

Another specialist agreed the reduced cardiac output experienced by severely weak hearts decreases blood supply everywhere, such as the olfactory nerve area transmitting smell signals. However, nasal issues, brain conditions impacting smell nerves, or post-Covid smell changes were noted as alternative causes unrelated to heart function.

When asked about gauging a weak sense of smell, standard tests measuring odor identification, discrimination and recognition abilities were referenced. Scoring below average could indicate a smell disorder. Those at higher risk include seniors, individuals with neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, chronic sinus problems, and genetic predispositions. Lifestyle factors like smoking, toxin exposure, and cardiovascular fitness levels were also linked to impairment.

The experts concluded certain circumstances allow for improving a poor sense of smell. Addressing fundamental health problems, treating sinus infections, minimizing toxic contacts, and boosting cardiovascular wellness may significantly enhance smell capabilities over time.
