New Delhi, Dec 16: A total of 438 suicides and seven fratricides were reported among personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Assam Rifles, and National Security Guard (NSG) over the last three years, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday.
In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai provided detailed data showing that the number of suicides declined from 157 in 2023 to 133 in 2025. Fratricide incidents included two in 2023, one in 2024, and four in 2025.
Force-wise, the highest number of suicides was recorded in the Central Reserve Police Force (159), followed by the Border Security Force (120) and the Central Industrial Security Force (60) during this period.
Regarding resignations, the minister said that a total of 23,360 personnel from CAPFs and Assam Rifles resigned between 2014 and 2025. Among these, the BSF accounted for 7,493 resignations, CRPF for 7,456, and CISF for 4,137. In 2025 alone, there have been 3,077 resignations, with the BSF recording the highest number at 1,157.
On service conditions, Rai said CAPF personnel generally work in eight-hour shifts, though duty hours may vary depending on operational exigencies. Provisions for rest, leave, and training are built into battalion structures. The personnel are entitled to 75 days of leave annually, including 60 days of earned leave and 15 days of casual leave, and efforts are being made to ensure that these entitlements are availed as far as possible.
The minister further informed that mental health support is being provided to personnel through CAPF, composite, and unit hospitals, along with specialized psychiatric services. The forces also conduct regular awareness programs, stress-management workshops, and yoga and meditation sessions to promote mental well-being.
This data highlights ongoing challenges in personnel welfare and the government’s efforts to provide support and maintain operational readiness among CAPF forces. (Agencies)
