BRO Restores Key Doda–Kathua Link Even as Fresh Snow Slide Strands Vehicles

JAMMU TAWI, Feb 15: An avalanche blocked the Bhaderwah–Pathankot inter-state road in Doda district on Sunday evening, leaving dozens of vehicles stranded, even as authorities confirmed the reopening of the Bhaderwah–Bani–Basohli national highway after an extensive snow clearance operation.

According to police officials, the avalanche struck between Thanthera and Guldanda, about 18 kilometres from Bhaderwah town, around 5 pm. No casualties were reported in the incident. More than 250 tourist vehicles had crossed the Guldanda stretch — a popular winter destination — before the snow slide occurred. However, several vehicles belonging to local vendors were left stranded. Men and machinery were pressed into service to clear the road, and officials expressed hope that traffic would be restored later in the night.

Earlier in the day, the strategic highway connecting Bhaderwah with Basohli in Kathua district was reopened for traffic following a prolonged snow clearance drive by the Border Roads Organisation.

A defence spokesman said the restored corridor reconnects the mountainous regions of Doda and Kathua. Vehicular movement along the 65-kilometre stretch had been disrupted due to heavy snowfall at Chattergala Pass, temporarily snapping the crucial link.

He said the 69 and 118 Road Construction Companies of the 35 Border Roads Task Force under Project Sampark launched an intensive operation in extremely challenging terrain near the Ashapati glacier and the foothills of Mount Kailash. Despite deep snow accumulation, sub-zero temperatures, and difficult working conditions, teams worked round the clock to restore connectivity ahead of the normal seasonal schedule.

The reopening has enabled the movement of essential supplies, emergency services, local commuters, and private vehicles, bringing relief to residents and traders across the region. Authorities said traffic has now resumed on the reopened highway, while clearance efforts continue on the avalanche-hit Bhaderwah–Pathankot route.
