New Delhi, Jan 16: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday announced the schedule for the election of its new national president, with nominations set to be filed on January 19 and the name of the new party chief to be declared on January 20.
As per the organizational election programme released by BJP national returning officer K Laxman, nominations for the top post can be submitted between 2 pm and 4 pm on January 19. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place between 4 pm and 5 pm the same day, while candidates may withdraw their nominations between 5 pm and 6 pm.
Laxman, who is also a BJP Rajya Sabha MP, said polling will be held on January 20, if required, and the official announcement of the newly elected BJP national president will be made on the same day. The entire election process will be conducted at the party’s headquarters.
According to party sources, BJP national working president Nitin Nabin is likely to be elected unopposed, as no other senior leader is expected to file a nomination. If elected, Nabin will succeed J P Nadda as the party’s national president.
Sources further indicated that Nabin’s candidature has the backing of the BJP’s top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, making his elevation to the post almost certain. (Agencies)
