Bad takes 2 lives in region

Jammu Tawi/Doda : Two persons were killed in different weather-related accidents in the Jammu region.

A minor boy was killed and four of his family members had a miraculous escape after a tree crashed into their house in Bonjwah village of Kishtwar district on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Yaseen, son of Noor Mahi Kholi of Patnazi village of Bonjwah tehsil of Kishtwar. His body was pulled out of the debris by locals and the police. Later, the body was handed over to the family for last rites.

The tragic episode happened around 65 kilometers from district
headquarters after a heavy Deodar tree fell on a mud house of a
Gujjar, Noor Maie Kohli of Devigol in Village Patnazi of Bonjwah on
Sunday ar around 12:40 am when they were in deep sleep as a result of
while five of the family members trapped badly inside damage muddy
Soon after the incident, the villagers listen to the screaming of the
trapped family members swung into action along with police from nearby
police post also reach the spot and started rescue operation.
During the course of the rescue operation, all the occupants were
brought out of the damaged house and among them twelve year old boy
Mohammad Yaseen was declared as dead.
Sandeep Kotwal, SSP Kishtwar while confirmed the incident said all the
occupants safely mange to come out of the debris of the ill fated
house and expressed his grief and sorrow over the loss of life in this
tragic incident.
The officer said, “due to heavy rainfall and windstorm in village a
huge tree falls on a mud-house resulted death of minor boy, but had a
miraculous escape to other four other family members.”
The body deceased boy has been was brought out from the debris of
damaged house by locals and police jointly and handed over to family
for last rites.
He said no report of any untoward incident has so far received from
any part of the Kishtwar District. He said that Police is reviewing
the situation on hourly bases in far flung areas of the District and
said that people has been advised to remain in door due to advisory of
heavy rain and snowfall that could trigger landslides and snow
In another incident, a 60-year-old man lost his life when lightning struck him in Miari Gujran village in Rajouri district. The incident took place around 7.30 pm last evening.

Meanwhile, the road connectivity to the valley also remained snapped after overnight rains triggered fresh landslides, shooting of stones and snowfall at several places on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The historic 84-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in Kashmir valley to Bafliaz in Poonch district, which provides alternate road link to Kashmir, also remained closed for traffic due to the accumulation of snowfall.

Thousands of Kashmir-bound passengers had been stuck in the winter capital, waiting for the reopening of the highway.

According to the Ramban Police Control Room (PCR), the overnight incessant downpour caused the massive landslides at Mehar, Panthial, Seri, Digdol and Gangru places on the Jammu-Srinagar highway besides the shooting stones at Sherbibi, Nachlana, Anokhi Fall, Seri Morh and Mehad.

“About 3-inch snowfall had accumulated near Jawahar tunnel, which had made the road slippery and not fit for movement of vehicles,” the highway officials said.

They added, “It was snowing continuously at Jawahar tunnel and the Umo area up to Titanic Morh on the highway. About 4-inch fresh snow has accumulated while it continued to rain in the rest of the Qazigund sector.”

Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Highway, Sanjay Bhagat said the 52-km-long Ramban-Gool road was also blocked due to landslides and flash flood in the Chhapri nullah, but the 50-km Batote-Doda road was reportedly opened for light motor vehicles this morning.
