Doda, December 12: Amidst much talk of Digital India, Make in India and what not, a hilly village ‘Dessa' of district Doda in Jammu Region has remained in primitive darkness since ages. Many generations have lived and perished seeing only thunder lightening during cloudy . The recent two generations have seen the glimpses of electricity just for few days when village was attempted to be electrified once in 1980 and later under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojna in 2013-14, but villagers claimed that poles, transformers and wires collapsed in quick succession due to bad weather that too within few weeks and the village relegated to dark era soon. The workmanship was cosmetic and just to dispose off the file and funds.
Situated just 35 kilometers away from district headquarters, villagers said they are living without electricity since ages and even the Independence of India did not change their lives and have no meaning for them.

Since the last collapse, no initiative was ever taken to re-electrify this village again. “Surrounding villages have been electrified about decades back, but people of Gai, Sheinkly, Manjmi, Laloor, Gurkhan, Kunda, Gramdi, Saras, Gorkund, Chanderbatan, Thana, and Mushal hamlets of Dessa have been left to their fate and to live without electricity with no hope.

“The matter was brought to the notice of local MLAs/Ministers in past and present in the last seven decades, but nothing changed for us,” Chand Lal a Sheinkly villager said.

Even the present MP and MoS in PMO, Dr. Jitendra Singh has been apprised of our miserable plight, but again nothing has moved. Villagers have to console themselves with just lip service.
“Poles, wires and transformers were installed in several hamlets of village Dessa under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojna scheme in 2013-14, but owing to their wrong installation and poor workmanship, entire infrastructure collapsed in snowfall and torrential rains within a month of its installation.” he added.

School students have been preparing for their studies and board exams under the light of firewood being the children of lesser God. “We need proper electricity in our village not merely an eye-wash, every time government claims spending
huge amount in the name of electrification, but all in air,” a high school student said.

District Development Commissioner, Doda and PDD Executive Engineer were not available for comments despite many attempts over phone.
