Army backs CRPF on use of pallet guns to control violent mob

Tawi, July 27: While the Army has backed the CRPF for using the
pellet guns and the CRPF bosses announcing that their men have been
asked to bank on pellet guns despite grave provocation the central
Government has decided to constitute a committee of experts for
suggesting some alternative ways for replacing the pellet guns.

Inside reports said that the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal
Singh, has had a detailed discussion with Prime Minister, Narendra
Modi and the BJP Chief, Amit Shah, for apprising them of the latest
security scenario in . The valley of Kashmir has been rocked by
19 days of turmoil in which more than 47 people have been killed and
several hundred injured. Reports said that Dr Nirmal Singh also
suggested to Modi and Shah to find out a way which could replace the
use of pellet guns.
The committee of experts has been asked to send its recommendations to the Union Home Ministry so that some alternative to the pellet guns was found. An expert team, headed by a Joint Secretary in the Union Home Ministry, has been constituted to explore possible alternatives to pellet guns, amidst strong criticism against their frequent use in Jammu and Kashmir for violent mob control.

Besides Home Ministry Joint Secretary T V S N Prasad, who will head
the team, other members of the expert committee are Atul Karwal, IG,
CRPF, Srinagar, Rajeev Krishna, IG, BSF, Rajesh Kumar of J&K Police,
Tushar Tripathy of Indian Ordnance Factory Board, Manjit Singh of
Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh and Naresh
Bhatnagar of IIT, Delhi.

The PDP leadership especially Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti
feel upset over the turn of events and have berated the role of the
mainstream opposition parties, including the NC and the Congress,
besides the separatists. The PDP leadership believes that the
destructive role from the separatists was on the expected lines but
the way the Congress and the NC also stoked the fire need to be
condemned. The two were expected to play a constructive role. Anyway
the PDP leadership is hopeful that the situation may witness
improvement in a couple of days and there was need for replacing the
pellet guns with a better and non-lethal options.
