Indian shooting legend Abhinav Bindra has added another prestigious accolade to his illustrious career, receiving the highest honor from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his tremendous service to the Olympic Movement. Bindra has been awarded the Olympic Order in recognition of his outstanding contributions that have inspired generations of Indian athletes to pursue excellence in their sport.
The Olympic Order is considered the highest award granted by the IOC, presented to individuals who have illustrated the Olympic ideals through their actions and achievements. Bindra’s award will be officially presented to him on August 10 during the IOC Session in Paris, wrapping up the closing ceremony of the 2024 Summer Games hosted in the French capital.
In a communique sent to Bindra earlier this month announcing the honor, the IOC praised his remarkable tenure serving the shooting sport at the international level through leadership positions in the International Shooting Sport Federation from 2010 to 2020. His influential role as a member of the IOC Athlete Commission since 2018 was also highlighted.
Of course, Bindra’s greatest achievement remains being India’s pioneering Olympic champion, capturing the country’s first ever individual gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His legendary performance on the biggest stage kicked off India’s shining Olympic shooting legacy over the next decade.
India’s Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya extended congratulations to the icon, stating that Bindra’s accomplishment fills the nation with immense pride and has motivated rising generations of sharpshooters to chase their Olympic dreams. There is no doubting the iconic status Bindra still holds within India’s stellar shooting contingent today.
Through his trailblazing success and continued service to sport’s highest governing bodies, Abhinav Bindra has embodied the Olympic spirit and worked tirelessly to advance India’s standing in world sport. This latest recognition from the IOC underscores his immense contributions to the Olympic Movement as one of the finest champions the country has produced.
