Bhaderwah, Jul 17: A 30-year-old man was killed and three Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel were injured after a scuffle during an anti-suspicious movement operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, police officials said on Friday.
The incident took place late Thursday night along the Jaie-Gandoh road, around 35 kilometres from Bhaderwah town, where an SOG team had laid an ambush following inputs about suspicious movement in the high-altitude area.
According to a senior police officer, the SOG team intercepted a youth at around 11:30 pm. The man allegedly attacked the personnel and attempted to snatch a service rifle, triggering a scuffle during which an SOG jawan opened fire.
The youth, identified as Aarif Hussain (30) of Cheeka village, sustained bullet injuries and was shifted along with the three injured policemen to the Sub-District Hospital, Bhaderwah. All four were later referred to Government Medical College, Doda, for specialized treatment, where Aarif Hussain succumbed to his injuries.
Police have detained a religious preacher in connection with the incident. However, officials said his exact role or link to the case is yet to be established.
Following the incident, security has been strengthened in Bhaderwah town with additional deployments of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police personnel as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, the Army has launched a search operation in the Jaie area to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the reported suspicious movement and to rule out the presence of any militants. (Agencies)
