NEW DELHI, Apr 1: Several Opposition MPs on Wednesday staged a protest in the Parliament complex against the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, demanding its immediate withdrawal.
Led by the Indian National Congress, the MPs displayed a banner reading “Stop Targeting NGOs and Institutions” and raised slogans against the government.
Among those who participated in the protest were Dimple Yadav, Ram Gopal Yadav, E. T. Mohammad Basheer, Supriya Sule and N. K. Premachandran, among others.
The Congress had earlier alleged that the BJP was planning to “bulldoze” the Bill through Parliament and termed it “blatantly unconstitutional” and “draconian”.
Congress general secretary (organisation) K. C. Venugopal had asked party MPs to reach Delhi urgently to attend Parliament.
The Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25, seeks to amend the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said it aims to enhance transparency and ensure proper utilisation of foreign funds, adding that those involved in forced religious conversions through such funding will not be spared.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the proposed amendments, stating they are intended to curb misuse of foreign funds against national security and not to target any religious organisation. He also accused the Congress and Left parties of spreading “false and misleading” information about the Bill. (Agencies)
