Lok Sabha Begins Debate on Motion to Remove Speaker Om Birla

New Delhi, Mar 10: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday began discussion on a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla, moved by Congress MP Dr Mohammad Jawed after the House reassembled following the first adjournment at noon.

Moving the resolution, Jawed alleged that the Speaker had disallowed the Leader of the Opposition and other Opposition members from speaking in the House and made unwarranted remarks against women MPs from the Opposition benches.

He claimed that Birla failed to maintain the impartiality required of the presiding officer to command the confidence of all sections of the House.

Presiding officer Jagdambika Pal informed members that a total of ten hours had been allotted for discussion on the resolution.

Initiating the debate, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was repeatedly interrupted by the Speaker while speaking on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address.

Gogoi alleged that the Speaker acted with partiality during the proceedings and said the resolution had been moved to safeguard the dignity of the House and was not meant as a personal attack on Birla. (Agencies)
