Jammu Tawi, Feb 18: The high-tech All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Vijaypur in Jammu region was meant to be a referral institute but it has instead become a referring institute as the patients with different ailments from this institute visit the Government Medical College and Hospital-Jammu (GMC&H-J) on a regular basis to avail treatment.

“On an average around 10-12 patients from Jammu AIIMS suffering with different ailments visit GMC-Jammu to avail treatment on a daily basis,” official sources informed the Northlines, while wishing not to be named.

These patients from AIIMS visiting GMC-Jammu come here due to varied reason, they said, while adding, “Some do not get timely dates for various tests/investigations like, CT Scan, MRI, X-Ray, surgeries, Ultra Sound and various other reasons, the official further informed.

“The Jammu AIIMS was meant to be a referral hospital where patients from across J&K could be referred but even after the passage of more than one and a half year it (AIIMS) has failed to come up to its expectations as the patients from this prestigious institute visit GMC-Jammu for treatment,” the senior official said.

The AIIMS at Vijaipur in Jammu has been sanctioned a total strength of seven hundred and fifty (750) beds by the Union Health Ministry but so far this institute has been functioning with just 400 beds due to acute shortage of staff.

It may be mentioned here that Jammu AIIMS is fully digital and the patients visiting this institute can avail health services through online mode.

The Jammu AIIMS will become fully functional to its capacity of 750 beds once the required staff in all the categories is put in place, sources said. It may be mentioned that Jammu AIIMS is faced with severe shortage of staff in sixty one (61) different categories required to run the institution to its fullest capability.

There are a total of one hundred and fifty four (154) posts under different categories which have still been lying vacant in Jammu AIIMS.

All these 154 posts under 61 different categories have been referred to Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited with file number MR01/2026/E-5793/Advt.no.541 by the concerned authorities for filling the vacant posts.

There are a total of 33 departments being made functional at Vijaipur AIIMS in Jammu including 20 Specialty and 13 Super Specialty departments.

The OPDs of all these 33 departments are functional but due to shortage of manpower the required health services are not being provided to the patients visiting the Jammu AIIMS.

As per the figures available, around 1500-1600 patients from different areas of the J&K UT and different States of the country avail the OPD services at Jammu AIIMS.
