KARGIL, Feb 13: Senior National Conference leader and former Food Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon passed away on Friday, prompting the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to pay rich tributes to the veteran politician known for representing Kargil and Ladakh with distinction.
The demise of the prominent leader was informed to the House by National Conference legislator Tanveer Sadiq. Soon after the announcement, members across party lines expressed profound grief and acknowledged Akhoon’s long-standing contribution to public service and regional politics.
Hailing from Sangra village in Kargil, Akhoon was regarded as a seasoned political figure who consistently articulated the concerns of the mountainous Ladakh region during his tenure in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. He held the Food portfolio and was considered a key voice for people living in far-flung and high-altitude areas.
Legislators described him as a committed and accessible leader with strong grassroots connect and administrative experience. Many recalled his efforts toward public welfare and strengthening democratic institutions in the region.
The Assembly observed solemn moments in his memory and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Akhoon’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Kargil’s political landscape, where he remained one of the most recognisable and influential figures for decades. (KNT)
