Jammu, Feb 11: BJP legislators on Wednesday staged a walkout from the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, protesting against what they termed “unparliamentary and indecent language” used by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the proceedings.
Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma alleged that Abdullah’s remarks, including the phrase “joote maaro” (hit with shoes), violated parliamentary decorum and undermined democratic traditions. BJP members raised slogans against the National Conference-led government and demanded an unconditional apology from the Chief Minister.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Sharma said, “Until Omar Abdullah withdraws his words and apologises unconditionally, our MLAs will not allow the Assembly to function. Such language insults the institution and lowers its dignity.”
He described the Chief Minister’s comments as “shameful” and accused ruling party members of mocking the Opposition through gestures, further deteriorating the standard of debate in the House.
The controversy erupted during a heated discussion, prompting BJP MLAs to walk out while chanting slogans against the government. Amid the uproar, the Speaker adjourned the Assembly for the day.
The BJP warned that its protest would continue if the Chief Minister failed to issue an apology, asserting that the dignity of the Assembly was non-negotiable. (Agencies)
