J&K sees highest POCSO case disposal in 5 years: Centre

New Delhi, Dec 5: Jammu and Kashmir has registered 42 Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases in 2025 out of which 23 cases were disposed of during the same year—marking the highest disposal count in the last five years, officials said on Friday.

The official figures shared by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice in the Lok Sabha states that J&K has recorded a notable increase in disposing of cases registered under POCSO Act in 2025 in comparison to previous years.

As per the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), J&K registered 42 POCSO cases in 2025, while 23 cases were disposed of during the year.

In previous years, official figures reveal that the region witnessed lower disposal trends with 7 cases disposed off in 2021, ten in 2022, four in 2023 and six cases were disposed off in the year 2024.

The figures revealed in the house reveal that 773 FTSCs including 400 exclusive POCSO courts were functional in 29 States and UTs as of 30 September 2025. “These courts have collectively disposed of 3.50 lakh cases, including over 2.25 lakh cases by exclusive POCSO courts since their inception.”

“J&K is among the Union Territories where FTSCs are operational to ensure speedy trial of POCSO cases. However, the UT’s conviction rate of 4.5 percent remains among the lower figures reported across States and UTs,” it government said =.

The government further informed that amendments to the POCSO Act made in the year 2019 introduced stringent punishments including death penalty. It also highlighted initiatives such as the POCSO e-Box for reporting abuse, awareness campaigns, training of officials, and monitoring by NCPCR.

Pertinently, the Fast Track Special Courts Scheme was launched in 2019 and extended till March 2026. It is funded under the Nirbhaya Fund and aims to expedite trials in rape and POCSO cases nationwide, including in Jammu & Kashmir.
