    For Countering Fake News

The issue regarding fake news, which has been come up for discussion in the Lok Sabha is of vital importance because the government seems to be struggling to counter this problem with many times ministers, MPs and other people on responsible posts also falling to prey to this scourge as some among these have mistakenly shared such a content on their social media handles.

The use of fake news to change the political narratives is also a common practice these days with many political parties knowingly or unknowingly sharing such unverified or morphed content to get edge and have political gains or to defame the rival parties in the field.

It is intriguing that such dubious content spreads much faster than the real and genuine content on social media giving no chance to   fact-checkers or authorities to intervene. It is again a surprising fact that the fake news percolates in the society with lightning speed which is far faster than the corrections made by the authorities thus denting the interests of the social media users.

Amid these challenges, the responsibility of social media platforms also becomes crucial, as their algorithms often amplify sensational or misleading content over factual information. Strengthening collaboration between the government, tech companies, and independent fact-checking organisations is essential to curb the unchecked flow of misinformation. Promoting transparent content-moderation policies and quicker removal of harmful posts can significantly reduce the impact of fake narratives before they mislead large sections of society.

The realm of harms due to fake and fabricated content on social media is detrimental to a large extent and therefore the statement made by the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha about government taking failsafe steps to curb fake news spread should be fast transformed into reality before it costs dearly to the country.

The government should tighten the noose around those spreading fake content on social media through technological interventions and legal courses, because the unchecked circulation of fake news can have serious repercussions like eroding trust in institutions, fueling polarization, and creating unnecessary panic or tensions in society.

An aware society holds great significance because digitally literate people are less likely to fall into the trap of misinformation. Strict monitoring and timely action should be ensured to end this menace of distorting narratives because allowing this to happen again and again is damaging the country in a big way, which should not be the case.

There is no doubt in the fact that social media has become a powerful tool in the digital landscape but its misuse by way of spreading fake news is a dangerous trend and therefore all the stakeholders should collectively counter this scourge to ensure welfare of the people and the country as well.
