New Delhi: Justice Surya Kant, known for contributing to several landmark rulings including the judgment on the abrogation of Article 370 that removed Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, took oath on Monday as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He succeeds Justice B R Gavai.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Justice Kant took the oath in Hindi in the name of God.
Appointed as the next CJI on October 30, Justice Kant will serve for nearly 15 months and retire on February 9, 2027, upon attaining the age of 65 years.
Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among the senior leaders present at the ceremony. (Agencies)
