NIA Takes Over Red Fort Blast Probe as Death Toll Climbs to 13

New Delhi, Nov 12: A day after a devastating car explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station, the death toll has climbed to 13, with several others battling for their lives at LNJP Hospital, officials said on Tuesday. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken charge of the probe into what is being treated as a possible terror attack.

The high-intensity blast occurred around 7 p.m. on Monday when a Hyundai i20 exploded outside Gate No. 1 of the metro station, igniting nearby vehicles and sending shockwaves across the Chandni Chowk area. The explosion gutted several vehicles and shattered windows of nearby shops and buildings.

Following the incident, the Union Home Ministry directed multiple agencies — the NIA, Delhi Police Special Cell, National Security Guard (NSG), and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) — to jointly investigate the blast. “All angles are being examined, and no possibility is being ruled out,” said Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited Lok Nayak Hospital late Monday night to meet the injured.

    Key Developments:

NIA Leads Probe: Forensic experts are analyzing evidence and CCTV footage to determine the sequence of events and the nature of explosives used.

Nationwide Security Alert: Tightened security has been implemented across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir, particularly at religious and public sites.

Red Fort Closed: The Red Fort and its metro station will remain shut for three days as a precautionary measure.

Vehicle Tracked: CCTV footage shows the Hyundai i20 was parked near Sunehri Masjid for more than three hours before detonating.

Casualties: Thirteen people have died and over 20 remain injured, with several in critical condition. (Agencies)
