Jammu, Nov 3: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team on clinching their maiden ICC World Cup title, lauding the players for their courage and determination.
Speaking to reporters at the Civil Secretariat in Jammu, Abdullah, an avid cricket enthusiast, said the team’s victory is “a moment of pride for the entire country.”
“When the tournament started, no one expected that we would win. But they played with a lot of courage and won some very difficult matches, especially the semi-final against Australia by chasing such a big target, which was not an ordinary thing,” he said.
The Chief Minister also praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for ensuring equal pay and perks for women cricketers, saying such parity strengthens morale and performance. “Earlier, there used to be a huge difference between the salaries of the men’s and women’s teams. I believe it will be very difficult to defeat this team now,” Abdullah added.
The Indian women’s cricket team etched history on Sunday, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at Navi Mumbai to secure their first-ever World Cup title, marking a golden milestone in India’s sporting legacy.
Meanwhile, celebrations erupted across Jammu, as jubilant youth burst firecrackers and chanted slogans to honor the team’s remarkable achievement. (Agencies)
