Stray Dogs Case: SC Summons Chief Secretaries of States, UTs on Nov 3

New Delhi, Oct 27: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the chief secretaries of all states and Union Territories—except West Bengal and Telangana—to personally appear before it on November 3 for failing to submit compliance affidavits in the ongoing stray dogs case.

A three-judge special bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N. V. Anjaria expressed strong displeasure, noting that only West Bengal, Telangana, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi had complied with its earlier August 22 directive.

The bench criticized the remaining states and UTs for disregarding the order, remarking that the court’s earlier instructions “contained everything” necessary for compliance.

The case, taken up suo motu, concerns the management and treatment of stray dogs across India. On August 22, the apex court had expanded the scope of the matter beyond the Delhi-NCR region, making all states and UTs parties to the case.

In the same order, the Supreme Court had also modified its earlier restriction on releasing vaccinated stray dogs, terming the previous direction “too harsh,” and instead allowed their release after sterilisation and de-worming. (Agencies)
