New Delhi, Oct 27: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has formally recommended Justice Surya Kant, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor. The recommendation has been sent to the Union Law Ministry, sources confirmed on Sunday.
Justice Surya Kant is slated to assume charge as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, following the retirement of CJI Gavai on November 23.
Justice Kant, who was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, will serve as the CJI for a tenure of over one year, until his retirement on February 9, 2027.
CJI Gavai, who took oath on May 14 this year, made the recommendation in keeping with the established convention of naming the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as the next Chief Justice. The retirement age for Supreme Court judges in India is 65 years. (Agencies)
