LG Sinha urges Jammu University to lead Climate Action and Innovation on Foundation Day

Jammu Tawi, September 8: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha addressed the Foundation Day ceremony of the University of Jammu and called upon the institution to leverage innovation, technology, and sustainability to prepare students for the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

In his keynote speech, the LG stressed the need for integrating sustainability in education and urged students to drive development that balances societal needs with environmental conservation. “Our youth must ensure growth without compromising ecosystems and optimize the use of resources through modern innovation,” he said.

Highlighting the urgent need to address climate-related challenges, LG Sinha called on the university to introduce short-term professional programs on climate change and undertake focused research on floods, landslides, and natural disasters. He also urged the administration to deploy student volunteer groups to assist the district authorities in relief and rehabilitation work for families affected by recent calamities in Jammu & Kashmir.

The LG emphasized that it is the shared responsibility of society to protect Mother Earth and foster a culture of environmental awareness. He urged faculty members to guide students in striking a balance between development and nature while adopting a multi-dimensional approach for sustainable growth.

Congratulating the university on its achievements in the NIRF-2025 Rankings, LG Sinha called for self-introspection and setting new academic goals to further improve institutional performance. “Classrooms must be transformed into thinking rooms filled with curiosity and creativity,” he said, advocating experience-based, interdisciplinary, and project-oriented education to prepare students for real-world challenges.

On the occasion, the LG felicitated distinguished alumni, NSS and NCC volunteers, and retired faculty members for their contributions. Power Grid Corporation of India Limited also handed over a PA System and streetlights to the university under its CSR initiative.

The ceremony was attended by Justice Tashi Rabstan, former Chief Justice of J&K and Ladakh High Court; Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu; Shri Tarun Bajaj, Executive Director, PowerGrid; and other dignitaries, faculty, staff, and students.

The LG concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to rehabilitation efforts and called upon the University of Jammu to play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable, progressive, and resilient future for Jammu & Kashmir.
