Srinagar, July 16 — The Meteorological Department in Srinagar has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, flash floods, landslides, and related hazards across Jammu and Kashmir in the coming days.
According to Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the MET Department, the Union Territory is expected to experience cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers from July 16–17 and again from July 21–23. Isolated heavy to very heavy showers may occur during these periods. Scattered rainfall is also expected from July 18–20.
The advisory warns of flash floods in vulnerable areas and potential landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones along hilly stretches and key highways. Residents, especially those in flood- and landslide-prone zones, are urged to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel. Authorities have been asked to implement precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
Rainfall over the past 24 hours has provided relief from the recent heatwave. In Kashmir, Kulgam received 17.2 mm, followed by Pahalgam (16.6 mm), Gulmarg (15.2 mm), and Awantipora (12 mm). Srinagar city recorded 4.3 mm.
In the Jammu region, Udhampur saw the highest rainfall at 43 mm, with Katra (35.8 mm), Reasi (25 mm), and Rajouri (23 mm) following. Jammu city recorded 15.9 mm.
In Ladakh, Leh recorded 2.6 mm, while Kargil saw 0.5 mm of rain.
