    Rescuing Indians amidst Iran-Israel conflict

As the Iran-Israel conflict deepens with the threat of all-out war looming large, its ripple effects are being felt far beyond the Middle East — particularly in India, where anxious families await news of their children stranded in conflict-hit Iran. In an urgent and commendable move, the Embassy of India in Tehran has initiated evacuation arrangements for Indian students, majority of whom are from Jammu Kashmir.

According to the Jammu Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), around 1300 students from the region are currently studying in Iran, primarily in medical colleges. In a major relief, nearly 600 have already been relocated to safer zones such as the city of Kom, thanks to coordinated efforts by their universities and the Indian Embassy. Yet, the situation remains volatile, and families back home remain gripped by anxiety and fear.

For two consecutive days, distressed parents gathered at Press Enclave in Srinagar, pleading for the safe return of their children. Their appeals to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar reflects both urgency and faith in India’s diplomatic outreach. In times like these, timely government action is not just a logistical responsibility but a moral imperative.

While Iran sees significant Indian student presence, a parallel situation may also be developing in Israel, where thousands of Indian nationals — including students, caregivers, and professionals — reside. In the event of further escalation, India must prepare contingency plans there too, just as it has done in Iran. Keeping in view India’s past successful rescue operations during global conflicts, India is confidant to conduct the operation successfully this time too, being India’s good relations with both the countries.

India’s foreign missions have proven their efficiency in crisis evacuations in the past — be it during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Sudan, or Afghanistan. Operation Ganga and Operation Kaveri are recent examples of well-coordinated efforts. The current scenario demands similar swift, transparent, and humane responses.

The government must also ensure regular communication with affected families to prevent panic and misinformation. The students’ safety, both physical and mental, is paramount.

The situation is a grim reminder that geopolitical tensions abroad can have direct consequences at home. It is essential for Indian diplomacy to remain proactive, vigilant, and humane — not just in safeguarding national interests, but in protecting every Indian, wherever they may be.
