Cricketer Chahal and Dhanashree granted divorce by Mumbai Court

MUMBAI, Mar 20: Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma, were granted a divorce by mutual consent on Thursday by a family court in Bandra. The court allowed their joint petition after both parties complied with the consent terms.

Chahal’s advocate, Nitin Gupta, confirmed the court’s decision, stating that the divorce was finalized following the submission of their mutual petition. The couple, who married in December 2020, separated in June 2022. They filed for divorce by mutual consent in February 2023.

The Bombay High Court had earlier expedited the proceedings, requesting the family court to finalize the matter by Thursday, as Chahal is scheduled to participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), set to begin on March 22. The court also waived the mandatory six-month cooling-off period, which is typically required under the Hindu Marriage Act before a divorce is granted.

Chahal is part of the Punjab Kings squad for IPL 2023. The couple’s request to waive the cooling-off period was approved after they provided evidence of partial compliance with the financial terms of their separation, including Chahal’s payment of Rs 2.37 crore of the agreed Rs 4.75 crore alimony to Verma.
