Indian Railways is the fourth largest railway network across the world making it necessary to implement all the latest safety guidelines in letter and spirit as it has to ferry thousands of people and tons of cargo round the clock to distant places. It is unfortunate that while managing the functioning of this entity shortcomings often play a spoilsport leading to loss of lives and property.
Considering the responsibility of Indian Railways to cater to thousands of people on daily basis, it becomes necessary for all the staffers of this department to remain cautious during their duty and in some cases even during their off times because running trains without mistakes is a real big responsibility and needs extraordinary diligence.
Lately, Railways has faced a lot of criticism on account of accidents, derailments and in the latest incident of stampede at New Delhi Railway Station because or huge rush of devotees heading towards Mahakumbh Mela site in Prayagraaj, Uttar Pradesh. To make Railways safer, it is necessary to work on the slip-ups and oversights to avoid the same in future.
In this context, the Railway Board Chairman and CEO has reportedly held a meeting with senior officials of different rail divisions through video-conferencing (VC) and flagged several issues including derailments of four freight and two passenger trains in January this year. The top official had suggested several corrective measures such as counselling of ground staff, regular inspection of coaches and wagons along with periodic safety drives by respective rail divisions where such incidents occurred. The chairman had laid focus on the issues related to operational safety and took a serious view of the derailments of freight and passenger trains in January 2025.
Reportedly in January 2025, the Railway Board had expressed concern over 485 rail accidents reported across the Indian Railways network in over 11 years on account of the Traffic Department alone due to the human errors. Looking at the figures it has become necessary that every single staffer of the Railways should be counseled individually because as the Railways publicizes ‘SAWDHANI HATI DURGHANTNA GHATI’, following the safety norms and the procedures meant for safety of railways operation religiously is the most vital aspect and there is no room for any kind of lethargy or carelessness.
It is advisable that all should follow the norms in Railways to make this mode of transport the most reliable and trustworthy besides being convenient and economical.
