BCCI mulling performance-based variable pay structure for Team India players

MUMBAI: In a fresh move aimed at improving accountability and commitment towards Test cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a performance-based variable pay structure for Team India cricketers. This proposal was discussed during a recent BCCI review meeting.

As per reports, the new pay structure would resemble a corporate-style appraisal system, where players could face pay cuts if their performance in a series does not meet expectations. A BCCI official confirmed that one of the suggestions made was to hold players accountable for their performances, with the possibility of deductions from their pay if their efforts fall short.

In addition to the pay structure, the meeting also addressed concerns about the perceived lack of intent from some players towards Test cricket. The team management raised this issue, aiming to ensure that the next generation of players values the longest format of the game.

This development follows India’s disappointing performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where they suffered a humiliating series loss to Australia. Prior to this, India had also been whitewashed 0-3 at home by New Zealand, which further intensified discussions about the team’s approach to Test cricket.

The BCCI’s move highlights a shift towards greater professionalism and accountability within Indian cricket, particularly in the context of Test cricket’s importance.
