New Delhi, Dec 13: The treatment of minorities in Bangladesh continues to be a matter of concern for India, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said in the Lok Sabha on Friday. He expressed hope that the government of Bangladesh would take necessary actions to ensure the safety and protection of its minority communities.
Jaishankar noted that there have been multiple incidents of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, drawing attention to the issue in diplomatic engagements. “We have drawn their attention to our concerns. Recently, our Foreign Secretary visited Dhaka, and this subject came up in his meetings,” he said. He further emphasized that India expects Bangladesh to take action in the interests of its own stability and the well-being of minorities.
The minister also highlighted the strong history of development cooperation between India and Bangladesh, referencing several significant projects under India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy. “With the exception of Pakistan and China, almost every neighboring country, including Bangladesh, has benefited from India’s development projects,” Jaishankar added.
