A remote village located near an active volcano in the Philippines faced a disastrous situation it never foresaw, as landslides triggered by a tropical storm wreaked havoc in the region. The town of Talisay, located in the Batangas province around 70km south of Manila, suffered considerable damage and loss of lives when landslides of mud, rocks and debris descended from nearby slopes on October 26th, 2024.
Tropical Storm Trami passed through the area, unleashing powerful winds and heavy rainfall that saturated the soil on hillsides overlooking Talisay. The unstable ground collapsed, sending massive landslides roaring into the unsuspecting community below. Over a dozen homes were buried under rubble, trapping and killing residents without warning. Among the victims were the family of 36-year-old Raynaldo Dejucos, whose wife and five children perished when the house was inundated with sliding earth.
The tragic events highlighted the rising vulnerabilities towns like Talisay face from extreme weather events. Situated in the shadow of the active Taal volcano, the region is accustomed to living with the threat of eruptions. However, many residents have now been forced to recognize other looming climate change-driven risks, as landslides had never impacted the area to such deadly effect before. With over 40,000 inhabitants and a thriving agricultural industry, Talisay exemplifies the challenges facing many communities across the disaster-prone Philippines that are increasingly exposed to emergencies once deemed unlikely.
While recovering from the devastating landslides, locals must now confront difficult questions about their safety and future in a place becoming more precarious due to climate impacts. As severe storms and unusual calamities linked to warming temperatures continue gaining force, at-risk populations worldwide are confronting hard choices about living with growing threats in the only homes they have ever known.
